Glitches in School Laptop Initiative

excerpt: Last fall, the Pascack Valley Regional High School District became the first - and is still the only district in the state - to issue a laptop computer to every pupil and teacher. And although officials have been touting the innovative program, which has been used at only a dozen or so school districts nationwide, there have been some glitches.
For one thing, students at the district's two high schools say, the filters on the portable computers are inadequate to keep Internet surfers away from inappropriate sites.
"Kids nowadays know so much about computers that they can hack into whatever they want and do whatever they want to do," said Pascack Valley senior Jason Horowytz, 17. "The students use them for playing games and distracting themselves in class."
